The
Club Español (Spanish Club) is considered a
historic monument of the City of Buenos Aires. On 27
September 1908, the cornerstone was put, and in 1911, possession
of this magnificent palace, which the Spanish community is
very proud of, was taken.
At the very beginning, it had a basement with
two rooms decorated in pure Arabian style, a ground floor
assigned to billiards (nowadays, a restaurant), and a grand
room of imperial style on the first floor, whose ceiling was
a work of art by the noteworthy painter Julio Borrel.
The other rooms on the second and third floor
were allocated for playing, reading and chatting.
This unique building treasures numerous works
of art, with creations by the sculptors Benlliure, Tasso
and Nadal Querol, Oliva Navarro, etc., and paintings by Sotomayor,
Maristany de Triago, Iturrioz, Quinquela Martin, Mayol, Nieto,
among others.
The Kings of Spain, Juan Carlos I and
Doña Sofìa, and the former President of Spain
José M. Aznar, have honoured us with their presence
at the premises of the club, which after almost a hundred
years of its construction, still maintains the beautiful characteristics
given by its founders.
The Restaurant, which works on the ground floor,
combines its original artistic style (bronze, marble,
wood) with the most modern fittings, which makes of it one
of the most important gastronomy businesses in Buenos Aires.
